A homeowners insurance covers your home's physcial structure along with you and your family's personal property. If you rent a home, your homeowner's insurance will only cover your personal property and furniture. Homeowners can enjoy liability coverage, which will provide you protection from financial dilemma should there be accidents in the home.

There are different homeowner insurance policies to choose from. These forms are similar but they vary in terms of perils covered. The most common form is the Comprehensive Form HO-3 which insures your home from perils such as windstorm or hail, fire or lightning, aircraft, vehicles, riot or civil commision, smoke, explosion, theft, vandalism or malicious mischief, weight of ice, sleet or snow, accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam, freezing, accidental teating, burning, bulging or cracking, volcanic eruption and freezing, along with other perils except for war, nuclear hazard, flooding or earthquake. A homeowners insurance can also provide wider coverage to include additional provisions for additional living expense, personal property, medical payments, and so on.

There are a few important considerations when getting a homeowner's insurance:

  • The area where you live creates a big impact on your coverage. People in states where hurricanes or storms frequently happen will have higher risk factors, making insurance a little more expensive.
  • You have the option to insure your home based on actual cash value or replacement cost. Insuring to cover replacement costs will be more expensive, but may be worth the additional expense.
  • Make sure you make a list of your personal belongings, and always keep receipts of major purchases, alont with a video or a photograph of your room. The insurance company will need this documentation when you need to make a claim.
  • Damage due to floods are not covered in most homeowner policies. It is a special type of homeowner's insurance, and will be provided at an additional cost. The same goes for valuables such as jewelries, antiques and technological items such as computers. Make sure you check details like these with your agent to minimize disappointment.
